It's hard to believe that just a few years ago, it seemed as if Iraqis were united, as the old rĂ©gime toppled down. Last year, Iraqis from all backgrounds came together to agree on a constitution, and three times Iraqis went to the polls, participating in a democracy and free elections. Now, they're on the verge of civil war. — George Thomas, CBN News, 2006-02-23Did the Iraqi people seem united two years ago or were they only united in their mistrust of the American invaders? Did they come together to agree on a constitution, or did one large segment of the population feel that the constitution was forced down their throats? It seems to me that two of the more populous governates voted by 97% and 82% against the new constitution. That's hardly what I'd call a resounding mandate. In fact, I'd say the only truth in the report I quoted is that Iraq is on the verge of civil war.
